A Conversation That Sparked an Idea
The idea for The Difference® began during the filming of the documentary Tactical Empathy, which tells the story of legendary negotiator Chris Voss.
During production, Chris spent long days with Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker Nick Nanton discussing negotiation, business, and the relationships that shape both.
Nick noticed something simple.
Whenever the day wound down and the conversation became more relaxed, Chris’s drink of choice was almost always the same.
Bourbon.
At one point, Nick asked a straightforward question:
“Have you ever thought about creating your own bourbon?”
The idea made sense. Bourbon has always been a drink associated with conversation—something poured when people slow down enough to talk, reflect, and build trust.
But the real spark came in the next moment.
Nick suggested a name that connected directly to Chris’s philosophy and the title of his bestselling book, Never Split the Difference.
If the philosophy is Never Split the Difference, then perhaps the bourbon should simply be called:

Enter Roy Milner
To turn the idea into a true spirits brand, Chris and Nick knew they needed someone who understood bourbon at the deepest level—not just as a drink, but as a craft and a category.
That person was Roy Milner.
Roy has spent years operating at the highest levels of the beverage world, helping develop and curate premium spirits programs for some of the most respected names in hospitality. His work includes building award-winning beverage experiences for destinations like Blackberry Farm and helping shape distinctive spirits projects such as Art of Alchemy.
But Roy is perhaps best known for something harder to find in the modern bourbon world:
Access to extraordinary barrels.
The relationships he built over decades in the industry gave him visibility into whiskey stocks that rarely make it to market—barrels quietly aging in Kentucky rickhouses, often earmarked for projects that never launch.
And in this case, he knew exactly where to look.
Roy had identified a remarkable inventory of bourbon originally distilled years earlier by legendary master distiller Jim Rutledge.
These barrels were originally intended for another project that never came to life after the disruptions of COVID.
Not only were they incredibly rare. They were still resting in Kentucky warehouses, fully matured and waiting for the right home.
When Chris, Nick, and Roy set out to create a bourbon built around trust, connection and conversation, Roy knew these barrels could become the foundation.
The First 200 Barrels
When Roy introduced the barrels, it changed the conversation.
The Difference® didn’t begin with a plan to source whiskey and wait years for it to mature. It began with 200 exceptional barrels already aging in Kentucky rickhouses—bourbon with both pedigree and time on its side.
What made the whiskey special started long before it entered the barrel.
The distillation process used longer fermentation windows, allowing yeast more time to develop deeper flavor compounds in the mash. That patience creates greater aromatic complexity—notes that continue to evolve as the bourbon matures in new American oak.
Over the years, these barrels developed the structure, sweetness, and character that define great bourbon.
When Chris, Nick, and Roy came together, those 200 barrels became the foundation of The Difference® Business Bourbon™.

The Difference® Business Bourbon™ is crafted in Bardstown, Kentucky, widely recognized as the Bourbon Capital of the World.
